What is a SERP (Search Engine Results Page)?

A SERP is the page of results you see after a search. Here is what makes up a SERP and why its layout matters for a small business.

Definition

A Search Engine Results Page (SERP) is the page a search engine shows in response to a query, made up of organic listings, paid ads, and features like the map pack, featured snippets, images and related questions.

Also written as SERP.

Why it matters for a small business

The SERP is the battleground. Knowing what a SERP for your key search actually looks like, how many ads, whether there is a map pack, whether a featured snippet eats the top spot, tells you what winning that search really requires.

Ranking number one in the organic results is not the same as being first on the page. Ads, the map pack and snippets can push the top organic result well below the fold, so the SERP layout decides how much a ranking is worth.

Different searches produce very different SERPs. A local service search is dominated by the map pack; an informational search is dominated by snippets and articles. A small business should target the searches whose SERP it can realistically win.

Worked example

A cafe owner searches brunch near me and sees the SERP is almost entirely a map pack of three listings, with reviews and photos, above everything else.

That tells the owner the organic website ranking matters far less here than the Google Business Profile, the photos and the review count that decide map-pack placement.

For a different search, like best brunch recipes, the same owner would see a SERP full of articles and a featured snippet, a completely different game that a cafe should probably not bother competing in.
